Defensive Playbook Reaction ovehaul complete!

Today I spent all day re-tooling the Defensive Reactions to the RUN Playbooks. It's as tight as it's ever been. I'm pumped. Now I plan to use the knowledge Jstout schooled me in and do a complete revamp of the QB WR selection priority. This is where things should get pretty awesome.

This sounds pretty sweet, dude.
The QB selection priority...is that a % given to each receiver to determine who the QB will throw to? Does this also include the probability a QB will throw, take a sack or scramble?

Correct. Under the new format, what I'm working with (and actually just finished up last night, in terms of rough draft) is the selection priority for QBs in determinging who to throw to. To make this super short, because I could write about this at length:

A QB will have two top choices. The first selection is his Priority, he'll gun for this WR the majority of the time. Second selection's chance is a little less than half the Priority WR. 3rd string, 4th, and 5th (depending on the Passing Play Pattern) all are at the end of the boat. They still get looks, just not as many.

I've varied it up for the play selection, so that it coincides with my defensive schematic. So now, basically, 'SHORT' passes are now 'SHORT PASSES', intended for tight-ends and the such. Vica versa, Hailmary's are now the target of, mainly, WR1 and WR2. I've also changed the game graphically in the play selection screen to list Priorities WRs 'ONE' and 'TWO' for the player's knowledge base.

I've also stripped the game of the oft-happening QB scramble, it's basically, non-existent now. The QB is also less likely to take a sack (because of being idle) and more likely to ZIP that F'N ball out to a WR, which has developed for some major NFL-style 'hit-em-on-the-go' kind of play.

All-in-all, this update is shaping up to be world changing for my views on the possibilities of Tecmo Super Coach for 2009-10.

Awesome!! Can't wait for this....

After I edited my version of your rom, I simulated an entire season - actually had all the games play out COM vs. COM only I upped the speed so the entire season only took a few days. Everything seemed to come out fairly accurate, the only issue was that every team's WR2 had at least 100% more receptions than the WR1. I then swapped WR1 and WR2, along with the CB's for each team, putting the better corner on the WR1. Assuming the WR1 would get more looks, but catch less passes because of the better coverage, but the same happened. The WR1 (in the WR2 slot) came out with 100% more receptions. Example: Miami season 1, Camarillo 49 rec, Ginn Jr 22 rec. Season 2: Ginn Jr. 53 rec, Camarillo 17 rec. TE's and RB's were somewhere in the WR1 slot range.

Yeah, some of the SIM issues in Tecmo, I've found, are not editable from our standard SIM stats editing applications that BAD_AL and the like have created. For example, the rediculous sim stats for QBs. Every version of TSB has this issue. Could it be fixed? Likely. I am not the TSB-brotha to do that, however.

Here's an example of what the playbook screen will now look like with the selection QB Priority taken into account. Should be good for players of all TSB experience levels. The bigger project coming up will be re-assinging defensive roles for the DBs and LBs.

NOTE: This is not what NYG's playbook will be like. It's simply for testing purposes.

Actually, I'm not talking about the sim stats. I had each game play out in full - every team was set to COM. From my end of season results, the QB targets the WR2 roughly 50% of the time, with the other 50% being split between the other 4 guys (WR1, TE and RB's...or WR3), however the offense is set up. Was just an observation. I'm guessing that what you're working on now will fix this.

Ooooh, gotcha. Yeah, that's because the original coders of this game had no clue what the hell they were doing. The 'logic' of TSBs original playbook reactions and offensive WR priority is rediculous, and something that my buddies and I have been complaining about in COACH mode for years.

Wow, I like the playbook set up. Definitely fits the "Coach mode".

On another note, this site is great for roster editing: http://subscribers.footballguys.com/apps/depthchart.php
I'm actually working on the 2009 rosters now and will finalize after the draft.

>> UPDATE [04.12.09]: **See First Post for 'To-Do List'.

As seen in other threads on this forum, I've *finally* figured out how to alter some of the reaction paths of the defenders to change their X - Y coordinates, in an effort to create actual defensive formations that are all unique (picture 3-4, 4-3, DIME, etc. or whatever it is I decide on--Jstout gave me some formation ideas as well). I couldn't be any more pumped right now. I expect this will take some time to create.

>> UPDATE [04.12.09 #2]: **See First Post for 'To-Do List'.

I've decided to eliminate the "1" and "2" player icons from the game, as well as the flashing 'player down field' triangle icon when player one or two is off-screen, primarily on kickoffs. Eliminating said triangle graphic also means that the field goal alignment triangle is gone. All of these changes highlight the COA aspect of the ROM. I figured, if I'm going to make this legit, why not go all the way, right?

Don't be surprised if I graphically take out the options for any gameplay choices that aren't "COA" on the blue menu selection screen. This ROM and the developments in the past few days have all but obliterated the MAN value at this point anyway. Makes those Play Action type passes actually interesting. Who's got the ball!? Ha.

Here's a screen cap of my GOALINE Defense Formation. Red arrows and stop marks indicate movement patterns. The QB isn't there because he's in the middle of flickering. ;)
